Two PTFF Films to Play Ashland Independent Film Festival

For a number of years now, the Port Townsend Film Festival and the Ashland Independent Film Festival have been exchanging representatives at one anothers festivals to see how they run, watch movies, and to generally develop some inter-festival collegiality. In the last couple of years, we have begun to share films. Two of the last PT fest films, Room 314, by Michael Knowles, and our feature documentary winner, Linda Hattendorfs The Cats of Mirikitani, will both play in Ashland this year, which runs April 12 - 16. Room 314 will have four screenings and each has already sold out. No doubt we will bring some films from this years AIFF fest. Two wed like to screen in Port Townsend but will be in general distribution by September are the documentary Arctic Son which was edited by Bainbridge Islander Bryan Gunner Cole and Manufactured Landscapes. Arctic Son, the story of a father and son reunited after 20 years, will appear on PBSs P.O.V program in August. Manufactured Landscapes, by noted photographer Edward Burtynsky who makes large-scale photographs of manufactured landscapes: quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. In this film Burtynsky travels to China to photograph the evidence and effects of their massive industrial revolution; its due for a summer theatrical release. Catch them if you can.

School of Athens, Port Townsend Extension Cancels Final Lecture

Its tempting to say it couldnt have happened in Platos day, but perhaps there were multi-chariot accidents then too. As most know by now, Sundays lecture, the last in this years series sponsored by the School of AthensPort Townsend Extension had to be cancelled. Driving a rented car on her way to Port Townsend on Saturday afternoon, science and technology attorney Lori Andrews was caught in a multiple-car accident near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. She was hurt badly enough to be taken by ambulance to the Tacoma General Hospital. Treated and discharged Saturday, she spent the night at the airport, and flew homeward on Sunday. She was scheduled to lecture on reproductive and genetic technologies and the disposition of frozen embryos. Organizers of the lecture series, now completing its third year, have indicated they will invite Ms. Andrews to return next season. Those who desire a refund should take their ticket(s) back to Quimper Sound, and write their name and address on the back. Refund checks will be issued by the end of the month. To facilitate that schedule, the School asks that ticket holders do this sometime in the next two weeks. On the 23rd, they will collect any returned tickets, and mail out checks. Those who choose to hold on to their ticket(s) will be considered as having made a donation to next year's speaker series, and we thank you warmly, the organizers said.

Tickets Still Available (But Going Fast) for A Wedding

Tickets for the third dinner/movie in our Robert Altman tribute, A Wedding, are still available, but are selling fast. A Wedding is a 1978 comedy/drama starring Carole Burnett, Geraldine Chaplin, Howard, Duff, Mia Farrow, Vittorio Gassmand, Lillian Gish among others, co-written by Altman and John Considine, now a Port Townsend resident. Considine will appear at the screening to discuss his work with Altman and answer questions from the audience. Altman, considered one of the great American auteurs, died in November. Two previous films were screened in this series: The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, which was filmed entirely in Port Townsend, and The Player, Altmans satire on the Hollywood scene. Tickets for A Wedding can be obtained at the Institutes office on the third floor of the Mount Baker Block Building, 211 Taylor St., Suite 33, or by calling 360-379-1333.

Got a Screenplay Ready to Submit?

The deadline for Northwest Film Forum's 2007 Washington State Screenplay Competition has been extended to April 24th. Details about the competition can be found at www.nwfilmforum.org/screenplay. The competition has two qualifying criteria: the script must be feature-length and its author must be a current resident of Washington State. The winner and top three runners-up all receive a staged reading at Northwest Film Forum in Seattle. For questions about this competition, send e-mail to screenplay@nwfilmforum.org.

Do We Have a Job (or Two) for You!

Perhaps you want to get involved with the Port Townsend Film Festival in a decision making position. It is more responsibility but the perks are amazing including working with some wonderful volunteers who always manage to make meetings fun.
If you would like to learn more about any of these positions please call our Operations Director Nancy Sendler at 360-379-1333 or email nancy@ptfilmfest.com.

We also are looking to recruit a theatre manager or two and continue to have open positions with data entry and the festival lending library.
