What the @&%$^(*) is the Port Townsend Film Institute?
Last year, in order to better reflect the year-round activities that have evolved out of the annual Port Townsend Film Festival (for example this weekend’s co-sponsorship with the Rose Theatre of the 1924 silent film, PETER PAN), the board of directors voted to give itself a new name, the Port Townsend Film Institute. The Institute will serve as organizational sponsor for the annual film festival in September, as well as
- A Moveable Fest, the festival’s four-day extension on Bainbridge Island,
- Year-round screenings,
- Dinner movies at the Upstage,
- Showcasing Film 2880,
- Reel World Flix, Skookum-sponsored student documentary-making class,
- Cooperative ventures with Peninsula College and WSU,
- Providing consultation to the Celluloid Bainbridge annual film festival in March,
- Student scholarships,
- Presentation of students films from Clallam, Jefferson, Kitsap Counties,
and a lot more as the years go by.
“All of the events and programs have developed out of the September festival," according to Peter Simpson, executive director of the Institute. “Since there is so much community support, we want people to know the full extent of our activities. Just calling ourselves the Port Townsend Film Festival doesn’t do that."
