5. ANY ROOMS AT THE INN?
We are less than three months away from the seventh annual Port Townsend film Festival. As programming wraps up and filmmakers are committed, we need to find accommodations to house them. And, if you have an abundance of air travel bonus miles, we can increase the number of filmmakers we bring to the festival. It's the rapport that is built between filmmakers and audiences that helps to make the Port Townsend Film Festival such a pleasure. Contact us at the office or by emailing nancy@ptfilmfest.com if you can contribute.
6. GUESS-THE-GUEST.
It's that time again--guess the guest! For those of you new to the festival, each year we run a four-week contest in which we offer clues to the identity of the year's special guest. The names of all those who guess correctly are placed in a box from which a winner a drawn. And the winner gets? An opportunity to meet the guest and to have a photograph taken with the guest. Beginning Wednesday, July 5, the clues will be issued via email and through local newspapers. If you want a head start, come to the open house on July 1 (see Item #1 above) where we'll announced the first clue.
7. GUMBY CELEBRATES HALF A CENTURY.
This year is the 50th Anniversary of Gumby, that beloved animated character that many generations grew up with. Saturday, July 15th at 1:00 p.m. Gumby creators Art and Joe Clokey will be at the Rose for a Q&A following a 90 min. presentation of classic Gumby short films. Tickets are available at the Rose box office during regular business hours: $12 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under.
This event is being held in conjunction with a Gumby exhibit at the ART MINE GALLERY located in the historic Inn at Port Hadlock. On display will be Gumby sets and props, clay puppets, photographs, clips from television episodes, a decade-by-decade Gumby retrospective and a demonstration on the techniques of animation. The Museum of Puppetry in Atlanta will be hosting a Gumby exhibit this summer, and the Museum of TV and Radio in New York and Los Angeles will also be having daily showings of a "Gumby through the ages" retrospective this summer and fall. The Smithsonian is also organizing a major Gumby exhibit.
8. THE HISTORIC LYNWOOD THEATRE CELEBRATES 70 YEARS.
tj faddis, owner/manager of the historic Lynwood Theatre on Bainbridge Island is a movie enthusiast as much as Rocky Friedman, as she is about the prove with the terrific program she has developed for the theatre's seventieth anniversary.
The two-day celebration starts on Wednesday, July 5 with a screening of THE CAMERAMAN, starring Buster Keaton and accompanied by one of the pre-eminent movie organists on the West Coast, Dennis James. There will be two screenings:
- A ma tinee pr esentation at 5 o'clock at $15 and a gala at 8 pm for $50.
- The gala actually starts around 6:30 with a pre-show reception with salad, light finger food, beverages and festive conversation. The especially-produced "Commemerative Lynwood Theatre Programme" filled with memories of Lynwood Theatre patrons over the years will be distributed. A no host bar of wine and beer will be available.
At 7:30 or thereabouts, the Lynwood doors will open and free popcorn & soda will be served by tj's lively concessions staff in vintage attire. At 8:00 Dennis James and ex-vaudevillian Frank Buxton will make special presentations and then the THE CAMERAMAN will roll.
But that's not all... After the show, concessionaires will hand out foot-long glow sticks to all patrons, and everyone will gather outside to witness and celebrate the lighting of the Lynwood's newly-restored marquee. A photographer will be on-hand to take a picture for posterity. And years from now, you'll be able to say, "I was there when they lit that marquee for the first time!"
* As if that weren't enough, tj's celebration continues on Thursday, July 6, with two screenings of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tripping the light fantastic in SWING TIME, one of the best movies of 1936, the very year when the Lynwood opened.
The matinee at 5 pm will salute all who worked at Lynwood Theatre in its 70-year history, whether they served popcorn, tore tickets, swept up popcorn, walked the aisles with a flashlight, projected film or restocked paper towels during the 70 years of the theatre's operation. They and their guests will enjoy free admission. All other will be able to see Fred and Ginger for $7.
The evening screening of SWING TIME at 8 o'clock will include Free popcorn & soda, a pre-show Lindy-Hop presentation by Bainbridge Island's own Jesse Mittleman, and a brief film introduction. Ticket price is $10.
tj can't take credit cards, so to make arrangements to attend, call 206-842-3080 or 206-373-6282. Best time to call is during showtimes which usually start at 5 p.m. Website: www.lynwoodtheatre.com.
